Marking the 100th anniversary of Georgia O’Keeffe’s (1887-1986) debut in New York, this major retrospective will explore the profound importance of this icon of American modernism by reassessing her place in the canon of 20th century art.
Featuring over 100 major works, the exhibition spans the six decades in which O’Keeffe was at her most productive, charting the progression from her early abstract experiments to her late works and dispelling persistent clichés about the artist and her painting.
A highlight of the exhibition will be her celebrated Jimson Weed, White Flower No. 1, on loan from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas. This monumental work – the most expensive painting ever sold at auction by a female artist – represents a key example of O’Keeffe’s investigations into still life, particularly the flowers for which she is most famous.
