Internationally Renowned Interior Designers Offer Solutions
and an Insight Into the Latest Trends

Based in the Chelsea Design Quarter, Maurizio Pellizzoni is well known for his personal approach to interior design and architecture. Here, he shares his expertise on the colours, patterns, materials and key styles for 2017.

“We will see a more sophisticated and elegant style, whilst simultaneously injecting something more personal into the space. The shift towards luxury will move from what has been a generic use of high-end pieces to spaces that have a unique touch as a result of personalising them.
“Developing the artisan trend of 2016, this also mirrors a new approach to craftsmanship. Increasingly, clients are starting to request a unique look for their homes and interiors as a personal reflection of their lifestyle and an extension to their personalities and also in the form of wellbeing as a place to escape to.
“Organic, natural colours and patterns relating to nature will be prominent as we move away from recent years reflecting austerity. This palette will work beautifully as we see a move towards combining earthy muted colour schemes with jewel tones and materials such as leather and bronze.
“Natural patterns will dominate from earthy foliage, gentle contours in natural materials such as stone, to animal prints, as these patterns and textures descend from the catwalk into our homes. These will take form in accessorising with cushions or rugs for example, but they can also create the wow factor when using them in upholstery or window dressings.
“The use of warm materials such as terracotta and burnished metals will also become more prevalent. Bringing warmth into interior schemes using the trend for velvet will also continue to be an influence and ties in well with the demand for the style of new elegance.”

Sense of space
Sneha Divias Atelier is a Dubai based boutique interior architecture studio committed to design excellence and sound execution focusing on residential, hospitality and commercial projects. It creates architecture and design experiences that are clean and balanced yet luxuriously detailed. The studio’s director, Sneha Divias, feels that lounges can be very prolific and versatile as the main living and social area in any project.

“The space planning is very important,”

she stresses,

“and it should cater to the client’s needs – how many people need to be seated, what kind of seating serves the purpose, is visibility to a TV or other feature important from all angles? These aspects should be considered as well as the connection and flow from this room to the adjacent ones as we can have isolated lounge areas for reading, relaxing or contemplation or we can have open plans where this area is connected to the dining or kitchen.”

Sneha likes to introduce interesting features such as customised bar cabinets, fireplaces and metal screens.

“These help to achieve the required flow and allow us to build an identity of its own. For this, it is fundamental to understand if the purpose is mainly relaxing, entertaining, reading, cinema room. We also consider the cultural context as in the Middle East we have a lot of clients who require separate lounges for men and women, the ‘majlis’. “Our studio consistently strives to create an exquisite and interesting experience for the users, a space that feels custom made to our client’s needs and that covers all the practical aspects of everyday living.”

Regarding the colour scheme, Sneha usually prefers to keep the materials and fabrics neutral and textured for a timeless design proposition which can be accented with artwork, accessories, some colourful patterns to add dynamic.

“Lighting is extremely important,”

she explains,

“so we make sure we have clean and well located architectural lighting as well as interesting low level lighting such as floor and table lamps for different lighting scenarios.”

New York to Notting Hill
Based in Surrey and founded by Susan White, iggi Interior Design offers a bespoke service tailored to a given brief. Using the latest furniture, fabrics, wall coverings and accessories the company delivers effective solutions from concept through to installation. This particular project by iggi Interior Design was for clients who had relocated from New York and settled in Notting Hill, London. Susan explains,

“As the clients are quite big entertainers, the brief was to utilise the space so that guests/family could quite easily interact with each other. They were also after quirky and intricate pieces, so it was all about the finishes that made it feel like home to them.
“Our clients wanted a conversational area so we zoned the lounge off by placing a big U-shaped sofa in front of the fireplace allowing an area for socialising. The footstool features finishes of tiger eye with a silk trim, while the sofa has an added diamond button detail. This detailing can be seen clearly both from the hallway and on entering the living room.”

Tonal silk rugs and accessories such as quirky drums and a side table were featured in the room to add the desired detail and character and represent the clients’ personalities.

“Black beaded, padded fabric panels were used for the acoustic walls as we wanted to give the room depth and interest. These also served as a blank canvas to enable the clients to feature their artwork. “All lights were made of silk and horn droplets making the room look stunning, while a Lutron/Creston system allows lighting, blinds and curtains to be adjusted to set the mood at particular times of the day.” 
