Gregory Phillips Architects specialises in award-winning residential schemes that are timeless and of the highest quality. These range from contemporary interiors to new-build architecture, renovation and landscape design. Having launched an office in Los Angeles, the company is now expanding its architectural services stateside. This spectacular contemporary residence on a picturesque 22-acre estate in Shropshire forms a prime example of the company’s expertise. The client’s brief was to completely transform his entire property from extensive landscape design and the renovation of an existing Victorian Hall, to the design and build of this stunning modernist home.

One of the priorities was to create a strong connection with the magnificent natural surroundings, yet retain seclusion. A meandering driveway accesses the new house, now the main residence, by passing the existing Victorian home, which the team also fully restored. On approach to the contemporary addition, an external reflecting pool is flanked by monolithic garden walls constructed of long, distinctive brick – an introduction to the architecture of the new house. “Our idea was to have the landscaping blend and interact with the building, blurring their boundaries and rooting the building to its site,” says Mr Phillips, whose work is known for creating a connection between indoor and outdoor living.

A covered walkway traversing the reflecting pool leads into a dramatic, double-height entrance hall – the first in a series of breath-taking interior spaces, many of which frame views of the surrounding landscape. The house’s layout has four wings oriented for optimum sun, all accented by a coordinated palette of traditional materials including timber, marble, brick, suede and leather. These are contrasted with the contemporary qualities of raw concrete, glass and stainless steel. The same bricks used externally have been incorporated inside too – in walls, stairwells and fireplace – to accentuate the visual ambiguity of inside and outside living.
