There’s growing awareness of a branch of art known variously as ‘outsider’ art or Art Brut (raw art). This was the term coined by Jean Dubuffet in 1945 for art produced outside the mainstream – principally by psychiatric patients. For the first time ever, a show exclusively devoted to female ‘outsiders’ opens a disturbing door into this world.
The Bank Austria Kunstforum has amassed 316 works by women from 21 countries dating from the 1860s when the first collections of this material were formed by the psychiatrists Hanz Prinzhorn and Walter Morgenthaler.
Until June 30th at the Bank Austria Kunstforum, Vienna, Austria
