Every year should be a Rembrandt Year, but 2019 happens to be 350 years since the death of the great Dutch painter and museums across the Netherlands are celebrating his work with a full calendar of exhibitions and events. A celebrated portrait painter in his heyday, the great man completed more than 300 works in his career but he was no accountant, living well beyond his means and dying bankrupt to be buried in an unmarked grave.

Rembrandt was a peerless draughtsman, his works are characterised by theatrical lighting, or chiaroscuro, as well as a lively calligraphic style and informality. Commemorative exhibitions in the Amsterdam area include major shows at the Rijksmuseum, Mauritshuis and the house where he lived, now the Rembrandt Museum.
