Masterworks from 1908-1918 commemorating the artistic genius born from World War 1 will be sold this November by Sotheby’s. The enormous psychological upheaval engendered by the Great War is vividly documented in the artistic production of the time, with artists responding variously with optimism, despair as well as a desire to rip up the old and start anew.
Many great masters of the period, and many ground-breaking schools of the 20th century, found their voice at this critical moment. Among the works are Ludwig Meidner’s harrowing Apocalyptic Landscape 1912, (estimate $12 – $18 million) one of the very few ‘Apocalyptic Landscapes’ by the German Expressionist that remains in private hands.
