Art: Young Wellington in India

It is arguably one of the most famous addresses in the world: Number One London, or Apsley House, was home to the Duke of Wellington and is still inhabited by the current Duke.

This year, Apsley House hosts an exhibition revealing a lesser known side of Arthur Wellesley’s time in India. The story is told in paintings, sketches, books and objects including the renowned Deccan dinner service.

Arthur, a 27 year-old colonel, sailed to India in 1796. Heavily indebted due to his army commission, he was probably seeking his fortune in the colony. Artefacts from this period on show include swords, jewellery, ceramics and books as well as drawings and paintings of his entourage.
