Marking its 20th anniversary, the Fondation Beyerler in Basel has understandably opted for a show featuring the great Impressionist Claude Monet – a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Among the 64 works are rarely seen treasures from private collections. The works span most of this ‘pictorial magician’s’ career. They take us on his journeys through Mediterranean landscapes, wild Atlantic coastlines, along the Seine and Thames rivers and into meadows and, of course, the famous water gardens of Giverny. It is in these paintings of water lilies, of which the Beyerler has several great examples, that Monet’s use of reflection and repeated motifs – that of the lily pads – reaches its zenith. The Fondation Beyerler, designed by Renzo Piano and set in the heart of parkland is a delightful venue. Take the well-signposted tram and enjoy the short journey through timeless Swiss country dotted with cows and chalets.
