The Conrad Rangali is located in the Alifu Dhaalu atoll at the centre of this island nation, just a short seaplane ride from the capital Male. Situated on two neighbouring islands linked with a bridge, it offers a range of villas – several of which are built over the sea – accommodating from two to six guests. This is a resort where you can indulge yourself in total relaxation or recharge your body and spirit through all the activities on offer.
Back in 2005 the resort claimed a world first by opening its undersea restaurant Ithaa; situated offshore, it is on the seabed five metres below the surface. The 12cm thick plexiglass gives diners a clear view and we were able to observe beautiful tropical fish in their natural environment along with Blacktip Reef Sharks. The seven-course meal also proved a match for the best restaurant setting I have ever experienced.
The resort has eight different places to eat, two of which are on piers over the water. There are also two spa treatment centres over the water with a number of treatment rooms featuring a glass floor. This allows guests to observe the sea life while being massaged.
After chilling out for the first two days, I was inspired to take to the water after I saw a 10 year-old flying above the sea wearing a pair of water jet boots. In just 10 minutes he turned from a complete novice to a mini James Bond as he mastered the technique. The waters are crystal clear and warm so the temptation to scuba dive or snorkel is immense.
We ventured out to sea with 12 other guests to swim with Manta Rays and Whale Sharks. Upon spotting the huge shark we jumped in and watched as it slowly glided along gulping krill and plankton. In all, we saw two of these magnificent beasts as well as turtles and rays. On another expedition we took a guide and two jetskis to a distant reef to observe dolphins who treated us to an acrobatic display and swam in formation with us when we powered up.
In November this year, Conrad Rangali is opening Muraka, the world’s first undersea hotel suite featuring an underwater bedroom, bathroom and lounge. Demand for the suite is high so, if you want to have a King Neptune experience, contact the resort to join the waiting list.
