Isamu Noguchi
Archaic/Modern
Isamu Noguchi enjoys a rare and privileged status as an artist being the architect of his personal museum. In 1980, he acquired a disused gas works in New York and transformed it into a gallery space devoted to his sculptures, drawings and designs. No doubt the Noguchi Museum has helped to promulgate his fame and he is now considered as among the most innovative American sculptors of the 20th century.
Noguchi’s inspiration came from far and wide, from the art of the ancient world from Egyptian pyramids to Buddhist temples, Zen gardens and American Indian burial mounds. The 74 works on show at the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum, most on loan from the New York museum, will further boost this reputation.
