Super Yachts: Freedom of the Ocean Part 2

The devil is in the detail – there is nothing average about these yachts.

Founded in 2010, Wider’s initial focus was on smaller day cruiser yachts of up to 42 feet. However, the intention was always to move into the larger superyachts and the company’s current range of yachts ranges from 130 – 165 feet. Its customers are truly international, coming from all over the world. Jeremy Roche, sales and marketing director for Wider, says, “The devil is in the detail. There is nothing average about these yachts. These are semi-custom yachts, much depends on the owner’s taste and decisions on interior.”

Yacht design and the technology used on board have both changed hugely in the last 10 years. “One good example is the beach club,” explains Mr Roche. “You can date a yacht of more than around eight years old as they will not have one. Wider has taken this a step further and dramatically opened this space to offer something truly in vogue but taken to the next level through the intelligent use of design.

“In terms of technology on board, just think back to the type of PC and mobile phone you were using 10 years ago – it’s another world. The philosophy with Wider is to embrace the new systems available and again this is reflected with our choice of diesel electric propulsion system. Five years ago there was little knowledge about this even if cruise ships and military vessels have been using it for decades. Now, with huge changes in the automotive market and a greater general awareness of the impact on the environment, this system is becoming more and more common place with several of our competitors following suit.”
