Art: Photo London

Ellen Kooi
Nieuwe Meer –  Surfplank | Camera Obscura 2016

Showcasing the work of hundreds of artists, this show covers not only what is new but the best of the past: early photography from the 19th and 20th century can be seen at Bernard Quaritch and Robert Hershkowitz. Highlights of Photo London are of course the anxiously awaited winner of this year’s Master of Photography award, who is Canadian fine art photographer Edward Burtynsky, whose work explores modern life in complex images of man and nature.

Atlas Gallery included new work by the Dusseldorf school photographer Andreas Gefeller. The Dusseldorf school is famous for spawning Andreas Gursky who, at £14 million, commands the highest price recorded for a photograph. Polaroid makes an interesting return at the Louise Alexander Gallery where personal snaps by Guy Bourdin feature models, friends and acquaintances that give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his infamous fashion spreads.

Magnum will present new work by Carolyn Drake and Matt Black – both outstanding photojournalists. The cultural influencers of Los Angeles are here too in works by Denis Hopper, Matthew Rolston and Janette Beckmann. In all, 108 galleries from 18 different countries are represented.

Until May 20th, Somerset House, London, UK
